America Conducts Airstrike on Houthi Rebels in Yemen: 31 Dead; Trump Says – Your Time Is Up, We’ll Rain Havoc from the Skies

The U.S. military conducted an airstrike on Houthi rebels in Yemen on Saturday. The attack resulted in the deaths of 31 people, including Houthi rebels as well as women and children. Additionally, 101 people were injured.
This is the first major U.S. action against the Houthi rebels since Donald Trump became president. Commenting on the strike, Trump wrote on social media, “Houthi terrorists, your time is up. America will rain down destruction from the skies like you’ve never seen before.”
The airstrike was carried out in response to Houthi attacks on U.S. ships in the Red Sea. Four months ago, Houthi rebels had launched several attacks on a U.S. warship in the Red Sea.

Trump’s Warning to Iran – We Won’t Tolerate Attacks on Our Military
Trump stated that these Houthi terrorists are being funded by Iran. He said, “These terrorists are firing missiles at American planes and targeting our soldiers and allies. These attacks have caused billions of dollars in losses to America and the global economy, putting innocent lives at risk.”
Issuing a warning to Iran, Trump said, “Stop supporting the Houthi terrorists. Do not try to threaten America or its president. If you do, America will hold you fully accountable, and we won’t take it lightly!”

Trump Says – Biden Never Responded with Strength
Trump remarked that Joe Biden never took strong action against these attacks, which allowed the Houthis to carry out strikes without fear. “It’s been a year since an American ship last passed safely through the Suez Canal, Red Sea, or Gulf of Aden. But now, Houthi attacks on American ships will not be tolerated.”

Houthi Rebels Say – We’ll Respond to America on Equal Terms
Following the U.S. attack, the Houthi rebels declared they would retaliate. In a statement aired on Al-Masirah TV, they said, “Our Yemeni forces are fully prepared. If America escalates its actions against us, we will respond at the same level.”
The Palestinian organization Hamas condemned the U.S. strikes on Saturday, calling them a violation of international law and an assault on a nation’s sovereignty and stability.

Who Are the Houthi Rebels?
• The civil war in Yemen began in 2014, rooted in the Shia-Sunni conflict. According to a Carnegie Middle East Center report, tensions between the two communities had long existed but turned into a civil war following the Arab Spring in 2011. In 2014, Shia rebels launched an uprising against the Sunni-led government.

• The government was led by President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, who had taken power in February 2012 after ousting long-time ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh following the Arab Spring. Hadi struggled to bring stability amid the changes, but the military split into factions, and separatist Houthis mobilized in the south.
• In their race for dominance in the Arab world, Iran and Saudi Arabia jumped into the conflict. The Shia-majority nation Iran backed the Houthi rebels, while the Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia supported the government.
• Soon, the rebels, known as Houthis, seized control of a large part of the country. By 2015, the situation had escalated to the point where the rebels forced the entire government into exile.
• With Iran’s support, the Houthi rebels have transformed into a trained fighting force. They possess modern weapons and even their own helicopters.
