Royal Anniversary Vatican Visit: King Charles and Queen Camilla marked their 20th wedding anniversary with a poignant private meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican, amidst a state visit to Italy filled with diplomatic engagements and cultural celebrations. The royal couple expressed their delight at the Pope’s improved health, allowing for the long-awaited meeting.

The meeting, which took place at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta, was a last-minute confirmation, following the Pope’s recent recovery from a hospital stay. Buckingham Palace released a photograph of the 20-minute encounter, accompanied by the Italian phrase “Che occasione speciale,” emphasizing the significance of the moment. The King and Queen conveyed their heartfelt best wishes to the Pope, who reciprocated with well wishes for the King’s own health, amidst his ongoing cancer treatment.  

This Royal Anniversary Vatican Visit was a highlight of their Italian state trip, which also included a state banquet hosted by Italian President Sergio Mattarella. The King humorously acknowledged the romantic setting of the banquet, attended by 150 guests, including notable figures like Andrea Bocelli and David Lammy. Queen Camilla also paid tribute to their anniversary by re-wearing her wedding dress from 2005.  

Earlier in the day, King Charles made history by addressing both houses of the Italian Parliament, where he received a standing ovation. His speech emphasized the enduring relationship between the UK and Italy, dating back to the Roman Empire, and highlighted the importance of defending shared democratic values, particularly in light of the conflict in Ukraine.
