Gold Smuggling Case: Ranya Rao’s Father Sent on Compulsory Leave, Actress Alleges Police Slapped Her 10-15 Times

Ranya Rao had previously accused DRI officials of assaulting her and forcing her to sign blank papers. Ranya Rao is the prime accused in the gold smuggling case. On Friday, her bail plea was rejected by the Economic Offences Court.

The father of Kannada actress Ranya Rao, the main accused in the gold smuggling case, has been sent on compulsory leave. Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation DGP Ramchandra Rao has been forcibly placed on leave. KV Sharat Chandra, Additional Director General of Police of the Recruitment Department, has been given the concurrent charge of Chairman and Managing Director of Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, Bengaluru, with immediate effect.

Kannada actress Ranya Rao, the stepdaughter of Ramchandra Rao, is the prime accused in the gold smuggling case. After her bail plea was rejected by the Economic Offences Court on Friday, she filed a bail application in the Sessions Court on Saturday.

Ranya Alleges Assault
Ranya Rao alleged that officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) assaulted her and forced her to sign blank and pre-written documents. In a letter dated March 6 addressed to the Additional Director General of DRI in Bengaluru, Ranya claimed that a false case had been imposed on her. She stated in the letter that upon returning from Dubai, she was falsely accused of carrying over 14 kilograms of gold.

What Did Ranya Say?
Ranya Rao, popularly known as Harshvardhini Ranya, alleged, “Your officials did not allow me to explain that I am innocent in this matter.” The actress claimed that she was slapped 10 to 15 times from the time she was detained until she was presented in court. She alleged, “Despite repeated assault and slaps, I refused to sign the statement prepared by them (DRI officials).” Ranya further claimed that she was forced to sign 50 to 60 pre-written pages and around 40 blank pages.

Threatened to Expose Father’s Identity
The actress claimed, “One of the officials told me that if I didn’t sign, they would reveal my father’s name and identity, even though we know he is not involved in this.” Ranya is the stepdaughter of Ramchandra Rao, a Director General of Police rank officer. Ramchandra Rao is currently serving as the Managing Director of Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation. Ranya has also acted in several films, including Manikya.

Gold Bars Found with Ranya on March 3
The DRI had earlier stated in a press release that on March 3, gold bars worth Rs 12.56 crore were seized from Ranya at Kempegowda International Airport upon her arrival from Dubai. According to the release, a search of Ranya’s residence led to the recovery of gold jewelry worth Rs 2.06 crore and cash amounting to Rs 2.67 crore.
